Balcones Distilling takes home two double golds and a bronze medal in San Francisco’s largest spirits competition in 16 years.

WACO, TX – Balcones Distillery has received three more medals to add to their long list of accolades. Judges at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) awarded double gold medals to Balcones '1' Single Malt and Baby Blue, and a bronze medal to Brimstone Corn Whisky.

The 2016 SFWSC was conducted on March 17-20 at the Hotel Nikko in downtown, San Francisco. The organization was founded in 2000 as a way to determine and award exceptional products in the spirits industry, and is now considered to be the most influential spirits competition in the world. More than 1,850 spirits were judged this year, representing the largest number of entries received in their 16-year history.

“Balcones Distilling’s accomplishments at the 2016 SFWSC are noteworthy, considering the very large amount of entries we received,” said SFWSC Managing Director Nicolette Teo. “Our panel of carefully selected spirits-industry experts takes great pride in ensuring that all entries are treated with equal care and consideration, allowing medal winners to truly represent some of the finest products from around the world.”

The 29-judge panel at the 2016 competition include industry leaders such as lifestyle writer, editor and publisher Anthony Dias Blue, Master mixologists Tony Abou-Ganim and Dale DeGroff, as well as spirits writer David Wondrich. The opinions of this incredible mix of talent provide for one of the most reliable and universal indications of spirits excellence.

"We are incredibly honored to have our whiskies recognized again at the San Francisco World Wine & Spirits Competition," said Balcones Head Distiller Jared Himstedt. "It is always exciting to see the care and attention we give to our spirits appreciated at this level. It is especially rewarding for Baby Blue to receive Double Gold today, just as it did in 2010, our first award ever."

Balcones Distilling has recently moved operations to a stunning new distillery site in downtown Waco, Texas. Formerly the old Texas Fireproof Storage Building, the new location provides Balcones with the capacity to meet growing demand, while maintaining the quality and authenticity that their loyal followers demand. The new site also provides Himstedt and his team the flexibility to create new styles of Texas whiskies and spirits. Brand-new copper pot stills from Forsyths of Scotland are a stand-out feature at the nearly 100-year-old structure of steel, concrete and brick. Additionally, Balcones has four times the spirit still capacity in the new location, with room to grow. Production has already begun in the expanded facility and the Waco distiller expects to open to the public before summer this year.
