Celebrate Swiss National Day On Saturday, July 27, 2013

- Get ready to celebrate Swiss heritage on Swiss National Day (www.sndnyc.org) in New York City, an annual event commemorating the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Organized by the Swiss Benevolent Society (www.sbsny.org), Swiss National Day (SND) brings together Swiss, Swiss-Americans, and friends of Switzerland, for a day of festivities and celebration. This year's event will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2013 from 6PM to 11PM at NYC's spectacular Central Park Zoo, located near the southeast corner of Central Park.

The SND celebration is the largest and most prominent event of its kind in the United States. Every year, thousands of families and individuals come to enjoy traditional and contemporary Swiss food, exquisite Swiss wines, distinctly Swiss entertainment and activities for every age group, and the Swiss Village, featuring Swiss Clubs and organizations, sponsor booths and vendor exhibits. Tasting Cards (3 or 6-Items) are available for purchase with Admission and include a complimentary Swiss wine tasting (for adults, 21 and older), featuring select wines from the vineyards of Switzerland, including Pankraz Pinot Noir Prestige Barrique, Schaffhauser Pinot Blanc, and Villette.

Headlining this year's SND event is award-winning, Swiss celebrity Chef-Proprietor Reto Mathis of MATHIS FOOD AFFAIRS. Reto Mathis, who operates six different gastronomic establishments on Corviglia of St. Moritz, is elevating the cuisine at SND by bringing a delectable "Culinary Journey through Switzerland," showcasing tasting plates of diverse regional specialties, including Fisch Chnuschperli with Tartar Sauce (deep fried pike-perch fillets), Risotto con Funghi (risotto with mushrooms), Cheese Tartlettes with Lambs Lettuce, and Alpler Magronen (macaroni and cheese, with fried onions and apple sauce) and Nussgipfel (croissant with nuts). Chef Yannick Germanier of The Consulate General of Switzerland in New York will be assisting Reto Mathis at the event. In addition, guests will enjoy a tasting of traditional Swiss fair, such as Bratwurst and Cervelat (traditional Swiss sausages), and Raclette (melted Alpine cheese), along with favorite Swiss sides and desserts, while children under the age of 12 will love the chef-inspired Heidi & Peter Kid's Menu.

Entertainment will be provided by the Swiss band Duo Leo & Walter supported by Ancient Ruins, as well as by DJ Alexandre Segal. Guests will be able to enjoy contemporary and traditional Swiss music throughout the venue, including on the dance floor, in the chill out lounge and Nespresso VIP Lounge. All attendees will experience science coming to life with the New York premier of Swiss robot "Rezero," crafted by Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule Zurich, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH, Zurich). This extraordinarily agile Ballbot designed to move on a single sphere exhibits unparalleled omnidirectional, organic motion and maneuverability. In addition, there will be a sea lion demonstration and feeding at the zoo; plus, young attendees will love the games, story times and Lego blocks in the Kid's Zone organized by Rella's Spielhaus. SND's team of volunteers will ensure all ages have a great time.
