“There is no shame in telling people where you came from,” said Chef José Andrés, booming from the main stage of the 12th Annual StarChefs International Chefs Congress on October 22, 2017. In the moment, Andrés was referring to his tenure working for Ferran and Albert Adrià at elBulli. But in context, wearing an “I am an immigrant” t-shirt and only a day removed from hurricane recovery efforts in Puerto Rico, Andrés was on message as political activist and immigrant advocate.
Tonight, February 27, 2018, Andrés will be honored for his activism and leadership at the annual C-CAP benefit, where he will receive the C-CAP Honors Award. The award comes comes just a week after the James Beard Foundation announced that Andrés will receive their "2018 Humanitarian of the Year" award at the James Beard Awards in Chicago in April.

Funds raised from the benefit go to C-CAP, a national non-profit that provides underserved high school students with education and career opportunities through the culinary arts. “C-CAP changes lives by equipping students with the skills they need to succeed,” says Marcus Samuelsson. “C-CAP helps thousands of students across the country through education and career placement opportunities. As a chef and longtime supporter of C-CAP’s work, I have seen first-hand how this program benefits its remarkable students and the industry’s growing demand for skilled talent. C-CAP’s Benefit makes a huge difference in the lives of so many students.”

The benefit is at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers, and includes tastings prepared by more than 30 of New York's best chefs: Samuelsson, Abram Bissell, Daniel Boulud, Markus Glocker, Alfred Portale, Thomas Keller, and Michael White as well Andrés himself, among others
