The 2022 class of Nashville Rising Stars anonymously voted on a Mentor Award, presented by Vitamix. The award goes to the chef who supports and inspires young restaurant professionals in their community. For his ability to nurture talent, combined with his generosity, skill, and vision, Sean Brock is the recipient of the Starchefs 2022 Nashville Mentor Award.

Growing up in rural Virginia, Sean Brock developed a deep appreciation for agriculture and its delicious gifts. When he wasn’t helping to grow everything his family ate, he was cooking and preserving, gaining a deep respect for the cultivation of flavor at its most basic roots. After studying at Johnson & Wales, Brock joined Chef Robert Carter at Peninsula Grill in Charleston, South Carolina as chef tournant. From there, Brock moved back to Virginia to work at the five-star Jefferson Hotel before being promoted to the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville. He honed his skills for three more years before returning to Charleston for an executive chef position at McCrady’s in 2006. Brock founded a farm on Wadmalaw Island, growing heirloom and endangered seeds in order to give his diners the immediate field-to-table experience he enjoyed as a child.

In 2010, Brock opened Husk, where indigenous products and seasonal availability dictate the changing menu. That same year, Brock won the James Beard Award for “Best Chef Southeast,” and in 2011, Bon App├ętit named Husk “Best New Restaurant in America.” Brock later opened two additional Husk locations—one in Nashville and another in Savannah. In 2019, Brock decided to begin a new chapter in Nashville. He opened a trio of restaurants including the seasonal, Appalachian-inspired Audrey; an ode to the history of high-end hotel dining, The Continental; as well as Joyland, a fast casual burger and fried chicken spot. In spring 2022, Brock will open his latest venture, June, a 32-seat experimental tasting menu restaurant.
