Mixologist Silas Axtell of Farmstead Inc. - Biography

Providence, RI

April 2014

For Silas Axtell, bussing and bar backing as a teenager was just a summer job catering to tourists and a few locals at The Chequit Inn on Shelter Island. But he ended up learning the role of a bartender in a more intimate environment than most people might. By 20, Axtell made his way to being a bartender, working at The Dory, just down the hill from his first job. That’s where he first discovered a dusty copy of The Savoy Cocktail Book, sitting in a cabinet. The language Harry Craddock used in describing the trade and techniques—the level of thought put into bartending was unlike anything Axtell had ever encountered and at that point, he knew he wanted to tend bar. He worked at a few other restaurants, including Vine Street Café on Shelter Island and Restaurant Kelly Liken in Vail, Colorado, both serving and bartending, before landing at Farmstead in June of 2012, and being promoted to the cocktail program a year later.
