Chef Kasuji Tanabe of MexiKosher - Biography

New York, NY

September 2017

Born in Mexico City to a Japanese father and a Mexican mother, Katsuji Tanabe was imparted with a kaleidoscopic palate. After spending his formative years picking up recipes from the chefs to the city’s elite, he packed his bags for Los Angeles.

There, Tanabe worked at Bastide Restaurant, Mastro’s Steakhouse, some Kosher-driven restaurants. Determined to cook the beloved food of his youth, Tanabe opened his first restaurant, MexiKosher, in 2010. The first authentic Kosher Mexican restaurant in L.A. or arguably the United States, MexiKosher has been celebrated among the best Mexican food in the city. Last year, Tanabe opened a second location on New York’s Upper West Side.

The multi-season “Top Chef” alum is continuing to take tortillas to the next level. His latest spot Barrio opened summer 2017 in Chicago, offering Mexican food with Japanese inflection—not unlike the food Tanabe grew up eating.
