Sommelier Felicia Colbert of A Rake's Progress - Biography

Washington, DC

October 2018

Felicia Colbert remembers dining at Woodberry Kitchen after her high school graduation and thinking, “I want to be like Spike,” but the pre-law life beckoned and she enrolled at the University of Maryland. Colbert, though, upon earning her undergrad diploma, rejected a law school offer, deciding instead to backpack through Spain and then attend the Culinary Institute of America. At the time, she already had a few years of fine-dining experience under her belt with front of house gigs at Washington, D.C. restaurants including Bryan Voltaggio’s Range.

Since 2017, Colbert has served as sommelier and wine director at The Line hotel in D.C. Hyper-local, fine-dining A Rake’s Progress from James Beard Award-winning Chef Spike Gjerde is the jewel in her crown. There, Colbert has built a tight list that takes guests from the Mid-Atlantic (think Virginia and New York) around the world (Italian Pét-Nats to Sherry and Madeira) and back again. Colbert also oversees the wine program at Chef Erik Bruner-Yang’s restaurants— Brothers and Sisters and Spoken English—in The Line. Soon to take her Master exam with the Court of Master Sommeliers, Colbert brings dynamism, authority, and approachability to the dining room—and more than anything else, she brings joy.
