Chef Cicely Austin of The Oval Room - Biography

Washington, D.C.

September 2011

Before crafting pastry for a living, Cicely Austin pursued a degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture with a minor in Art. But a culinary calling—and a flare for art, dimension, scale, symmetry, and whimsy—led her away from her first professional path and straight to The Culinary Institute of America, where she received degrees both in the Culinary Art and Baking and Pastry.

After interning under Top Chef Pastry Chef Johnny Iuzzini for a year, Austin returned to her native Washington, DC, to work under the culinary duo Chefs John Krinn and Jon Mathieson at Inox. In fall 2011, Austin joined the Knightsbridge Restaurants group as pastry chef for The Oval Room, Ardeo- Bardeo, and The Bombay Club. Since taking over the pastry program, she has made the menu her own by introducing modern twists on familiar, classic flavors. Austin also is responsible for creating and implementing seasonal desserts, special event items, and specialty cakes, as well as overseeing a small but eager staff.
