Carlos Montoya of Sweet Life Café - Biography

Martha's Vineyard, MA

August 2013

Bright-eyed and soft spoken Chef Carlos Montoya came to Martha’s Vineyard from Manhattan—after having worked at Aureole and Fresco. He started as the sous-chef for Chef Scott Ehrlich in the summer haven’s Sweet Life Café, in Oak Bluffs before doing stints at the Edgartown Yacht Club and Détente Restaurant also in Edgartown. When Kevin and Suzanna Crowell, owners of Détente took over Sweet Life Café, they invited Montoya to be the head chef. At the restaurant where he first started on the island,he now applies his solid techniques impeccably and crafts New England isle-style cuisine with a classic French sensibility. On his menu, for example, you can find house-made pork jerky garnishing hamachi, and zucchini blossoms being used to fill lobsters.
