: as a waiter/server I can immediatly 90% of the time who will tip and who won't just by the way a person will say please thank and no thank you the way they hold them self is an imeddiate indication of how they're going to tip as a result I know when not to worry about a table that acts like trash or complains over things that I have no control over like noise level, the wait at the door, cook times, the temperature in the restuarant etc... I worked in the service industry for 20 years and because of that I know what it takes to give good service. When I am the recipicant of good sevice I over tip. Serving is hard-hard work that requires many talents, but by the same token when sevice is poor I won't tip out of sense of obligation. A server that is too busy chatting it up with his/her buddies to notice when my food is up, my table needs to be cleared, etcera is to busy to take my money.
