Unfortunately, there is nodefinitive answer here. Some patrons like yourself, feel rushed if theircompanion`plates are removed too soon.Other diners want their plates removed from in front of them the secondthat they are finished. As a server,I usually ask before I remove the plate. As a diner you can signal tothe waitstaff as well. Stacking your dishes orPlacing your utensils parallel to each other at the 5 o` position is anindication to me that you want the dishesremoved. Keep your utensils apart if you want to keep your plate so thatyour companion doesn` feel rushed.As a server, it is very hard to know who has what preference. When indoubt-I ask" may I remove your plate?"You can say yes or no.Jane
