Gale Herman
has been a member of the ATLAS family from the beginning. Since opening
in 1999, ATLAS has received 3 Stars from the New York Times, Best New
Wine List from Food and Wine Magazine and "Top Five" - New York's Best
New Restaurant from Zagat Survey. As Sommelier at Atlas, Ms. Herman
has had the distinct honor of working along side two talented wine directors,
Christopher Catanesi of Gramercy Tavern and Benjamin Breen of Veritas.
The ATLAS beverage program is unique and exciting, showcasing spirits,
beer and wine from small production houses at value conscious prices.
Ms.
Herman holds certification from the Sommelier Society of America, Higher
Certification from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and is
currently pursuing the WSET Diploma under Mary Ewing-Mulligan. Mrs.
Ewing-Mulligan is the only American woman to hold the prestigious title
of Master of Wine. Ms. Herman also holds degrees in Literature, Education
and Restaurant Management.
This
passion for education has led Ms. Herman around the world. In the early
1990's, she learned the brewing process from Brew Master Brad Kraus,
while running downtown Albuquerque's only Micro Brewery/Restaurant.
After leaving New Mexico, Ms. Herman spent six weeks backpacking throughout
French wine country. For the "Crush" in 2000, Ms. Herman embarked on
a two-month winemaking internship at Russian Hill Winery in Sonoma's
Russian River Valley.
Currently,
Ms. Herman teaches wine classes at the Silo Cooking School in Connecticut
and consults for the Tyler Hill Farm and Country Inn in Pennsylvania.
In New York, Ms. Herman promotes staff education at ATLAS and encourages
a service style that is warm and friendly with an obvious excitement
for the story "Behind the Wine."
