Mark Tropea, formerly of the Desmond Hotel in Malvern, is now chef-owner of Sonata, a 40-seat BYOB restaurant in Liberties Walk. The food is contemporary American "with a little flash, but not enough to scare people away," in Tropea's words.

A fire in the early hours of July 4th caused extensive damage to Annisa. The restaurant is now closed, but chef-owner Anita Lo plans to rebuild and reopen in the same space.

Aqualis Grill, a Mediterranean-inspired seasonal seafood restaurant has opened in Fort Greene. This is the first restaurant from owner Gorian Papa, and Chef John Tsakinis runs the kitchen.
Chef Chris Cheung (Monkey Bar) reemerges at Vue, the eighth-floor restaurant in Park Slope's Hotel Le Bleu. His menu of New American dishes will include standards like filet mignon with grilled shrimp, to be enjoyed in the main dining room or adjoining patio.

Nate Appleman (2007 Rising Star Award Winner) has left A16 and SPQR, and he has a few as-yet-unnamed projects in the works. The parting has been in the works for a few weeks and was amicable. To replace Appleman, the partners have promoted from within. Liza Shaw is now chef at A16 and at SPQR Christopher Behr is chef de cuisine and Hugh Thornton is executive sous chef.

Oceanaire, parent company of Oceanaire Seafood Room restaurants, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closed four of its 16 restaurants, including those in Seattle, Cincinnati, Charlotte and Philadelphia.

banQ Co-Owner's Mark Raab and Hemant Chowdhury have added sommelier Geoffrey Fallon to their team. Fallon has been the recipient of Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence for the past seven years and has taken part in the Nantucket Wine Festival, Tanglewood Wine and Food Festival and Martha's Vinyard Harvest Festival.

Landmark restaurant Welliver's Smorgasbord will change hands after more than 60 years of family ownership. The as-yet-unnamed buyer will keep Welliver's open and allow the current owners and 50 employees to keep their jobs. The restaurant had been facing closure because of a huge tax debt.
