4. Interview Question and Tip: Chef Matt Lyman of Pico in Los Angeles, CA

Question:
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? (Some people don't get the question. I am looking for people with drive and motivation.)

Tip: Push yourself as much as you can. Get the best training you can. Go somewhere where you are going to get your ass kicked.

5. Jobseeker Hotplate: You and Julia

Did you know that Julia Child never owned a restaurant or ran a kitchen crew? She didn’t even begin cooking until she was in her 30’s. But who would argue that Julia Child is not one of the most influential cooks of this century?

Julia pioneered the way for the present-day celebrity chefs phenomenon. There continues to be a lot of attention these days on the celebrity chef. The lives and careers of celebrity chefs are fascinating and inspiring, but it is not the only path to success in the culinary business. For those of you out there interested in the culinary world but certain the kitchen is not your domain, do not despair. There are many ways to employ your passions and talents. You could:

  • be a food stylist
  • work in a food PR firm
  • teach cooking classes
  • write food articles or cookbooks
  • be a food broker or buyer
  • work for a tradeshow company
  • be an event planner

The possibilities are as far-reaching as your dream. Julia would be proud.
