When evaluating the experience necessary for a position, you have to weigh whether it is more effective to hire someone at a higher wage because they have experience or hire someone with less experience that you can train on the job. Previous experience will not guarantee employees will perform tasks in the manner you wish them to. In fact, many times employees will have to be de-programmed of their bad habits and re-trained to perform their tasks to your standards.

Either way, training is a necessary part of running a business and should be standard procedure when hiring a new employee. Employees should be given an overview of all tasks they will have to perform, even the most mundane and obvious ones.

Since 2001, over 100 restaurants in New York and surrounding areas have helped Action Against Hunger (AAH) by participating in Restaurants Against Hunger—inviting customers to have dinner in their establishments and donating a percentage of their profits to AAH. This year, the event will take place in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and Boston. The event will be a win-win proposition for both participating restaurants and AAH.

• The event will be held on a Tuesday night, typically a slow night, in order to increase business for restaurants on that day.
• A minimum donation of 20% of sales for the night is requested in order to generate media coverage, provide high quality public relations for restaurants, and maximize donations for AAH.
