| 1. Tough Interview Question of the Month If you witness another employee giving away food or beverages without authorization, what would you do? What you are looking for in a response: Obviously, you want to hear that the applicant thinks this is unacceptable behavior, despite its prevalence in the industry. You also want to know how they would approach the situation. Will they confront the offender personally? This may reflect a take-charge attitude. Will they go directly to the manager? This may mean they like to follow the rules. |

| 5. CEO’s Dish: Questions for Employee References It’s difficult to know what to ask from a reference for a potential employee. Many are hesitant to share information – good or bad - for fear of a lawsuit. You may want to check on the laws of your state before you pick up that phone, but some states allow negative statements as long as they are made in “good faith.” Make sure you introduce yourself and explain the reason for your call. Simple courtesy may lead to better results. Here are some questions you may want to ask: Can you verify that Applicant Annie Wall worked for you from August 2000 until March 2003? What was her position? How would you describe your working relationship? Applicant Annie Wall told me she received and broke down the daily meat and fish order in addition to her duties at the grill station. Is this an accurate description of her daily functions? How would you rate her skills at these tasks? Did she meet the requirements for her position? What were her strongest skills? Where did she need improvement? Would you hire Applicant Annie Wall again for a similar position? |
