5. CEO's Dish: Checking References

If past behavior is a good indicator of future performance, checking the references of a potential employee is the best way to determine how they may fit into your organization. The time to check references is usually after you have interviewed your best selection of applicants. The interview process may generate questions or concerns about behavior – a topic not easily discussed with the applicants themselves. A call to an applicant’s reference may be all that is needed to clear the air. Getting a reliable reference in writing can be tricky – many former employers will only acknowledge a person’s tenure and position with the company. But sometimes a friendly call will result in the information you are looking for.
