The 2006 James Beard Awards

The culinary stars shone brightly at the
16th annual James Beard Foundation Awards, held Monday, May
8th at the Marriott Marquis in New York’s Times Square.

Ceremonies Cokie Roberts, the evening had the glamour of the
Oscars and the good taste of America’s best restaurants.
StarChefs.com was behind-the-scenes for the awards, interviewing
the winners as well as the gala chefs.
This year the James Beard Awards celebrated
the culinary legacy of New Orleans. The foundation honored
the New Orleans Restaurant Community as its 2006 Humanitarian
of the Year. Beloved New Orleans chefs, including

Leah Chase of Dookie Chase’s, Ross
Eirich
of Galatoire’s, and Emeril Lagasse of Emeril’s
Restaurant, created a reception menu that featured Creole
and Cajun cuisine from beignets to daube glacé, and
proceeds from gala ticket sales were donated to a charitable
fund established to assist in the rebuilding of the New Orleans
Restaurant Community.
Among this year’s award winners were
New York’s The Modern for Restaurant of the Year, Daniel
Boulud for Outstanding Restaurateur of the Year, and Spatulatta.com,
an online cooking site created by two sisters, ages 8 and
10, became the first website honored by the foundation. This
year’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to Alfred A.
Knopf Senior Editor and President Judith Jones, whose work
has brought authors such as Julia Child and Madhur Jaffrey
to the American culinary consciousness.
