Recession begets innovation, and here’s a new one to add to the list of inspired coping mechanisms: Chicago’s sleek wine bar Juicy Wine Co.’s Tuesday night half-priced Pinot Noir and BLT deal. Born of a love for cheeky pairings, affordable Pinot Noir, and savvy business, the deal has boosted Tuesday night traffic to weekend levels.
Juicy started the deal in December, and since then Tuesdays have become as busy as a Friday or Saturday, wooing wine and bacon lovers from across Chicago. All signs point to the deal continuing well through the summer—and come fall owner/wine director Rodney Alex is adding Juicy’s own private release Pinot Noir (currently sitting in barrels in New Zealand) to the list.
For Alex, though it’s not only the increased Tuesday business that makes him smile—it’s the BLT and Pinot pairing itself that he rhapsodizes about: “The saltiness in the bacon firms up the tannins in the Pinot Noir. It has enough wonderful fat to match a big juicy Pinot from the Russian River Valley, and enough smokiness and soul to match with a Burgundy. The tomato and the lettuce work perfectly to cool down the palate afterwards, and the toastiness of the bread brings out a wonderful toasty, smoky element.”
Yes, it’s a smart pairing and delicious product, but we wouldn’t be mentioning it here if it wasn’t a hell of a deal and a hell of an idea to bring in the crowds on a typically slow week night.
