With
Empty Bowls, you and your children can take part in a way that
encourages creativity and nurtures global learning at a young
age through a medium that kids love art.
|
| |
-
Teachers teach children about World Food Day and some general
facts about hunger that will be provided by Action Against Hunger
- Children
make bowls out of clay and paint them in solidarity with the
800 million people especially children who face
an empty bowl every day
- Discount
school packages of "Sculptey Clay," paints and glaze.
The Sculptey clay can be fired in an ordinary oven.
- Parents
buy bowls and donate proceeds to Action Against Hunger's
hunger relief efforts
- Action
Against Hunger's fieldworkers visit the school to talk
to parents, faculty, and staff about the organization's
work. (At Greenwich High School, two hundred parents made donations
and received ceramic bowls. The students introduced the topic
and Action Against Hunger's water and sanitation engineer
David Blanc, and nurse-nutritionist Diane Filter spoke about
our mission, programs, and personal experiences on the field.)
- The
best bowls can be displayed at the benefit gala on World Food
Day at Tavern on the Green

How
have kids been involved in World Food Day?
|
| |
On
World Food Day 2000, kids on Long Island participated in their
13th annual WFD essay competition. Kids in Baltimore conducted
a citywide food collection with a goal of 250,000 pounds of
food. And students across the country are participating in the
growing Empty Bowl project.

What
will the Empty Bowls project in my school for World Food Day allow
Action Against Hunger to do?
|
| |
-
Continue to save lives of the most vulnerable victims of hunger:
children under 5, refugees, and displaced people
- Attack
hunger on 4 fronts: nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and
food security
- Fund
programs of emergency relief and long-term sustainable development
in 40 countries plagued by war, conflict, and natural disaster
- With
91% of our funds going directly to proven field programs, virtually
all money raised is used to fight hunger
|
| |
We
hope that you will bring Empty Bowls to your school. We would
provide you with any information or adapt the project to your
needs, and we could arrange to speak at your school with our fieldworkers.
World Food Day is a wonderful opportunity to teach our young children
about something positive they can do while furthering a sense
of global community and caring.
