February 2009
Stretching from Manhattan to the Adirondack Mountains, New York's Hudson River Valley is home to more than 70 farmers’ markets, a landscape punctuated by farmsteads, cheesemakers, distilleries and vineyards, and a growing cadre of talented chefs. But despite being in the culinary shadow of the Big Apple, the region is gaining acclaim as a culinary destination in a relaxed and scenic setting. Hudson Valley Restaurant Week is a two-week event from March 22nd through April 3rd (held Sunday through Friday each week) with over 85 restaurants will offer $28.09 prix fixe three-course dinners and many will also offer a $20.09 three-course lunch.
But this event is not just about great food at a great price, Hudson Valley Restaurant Week has a dual mission of supporting local farms and artisanal food producers as well as local restaurants. Using locally produced ingredients on Restaurant Week menus is key to the mission of this culinary event. “Chefs go all out to wow customers using many ingredients from Hudson Valley farms,” says Janet Crawshaw, Restaurant Week organizer and publisher of The Valley Table magazine, the Valley’s leading voice on the local food and farm scene. “They’ll be featuring some of the finest products the valley has to offer, such as venison, heritage pork, artisanal cheeses, apples, and wine. Even in March, farm-to-table feasting is possible and a pleasure.”
Supporting local agriculture and strengthening the links among food producers, marketers, restaurateurs, and consumers is at the core of The Valley Table magazine; what better way to further their mission than to incorporate this theme into this annual two-week restaurant event? Chefs, restaurateurs, and consumers alike are trending toward supporting local agriculture more and more these days, and for the Hudson Valley in particular, it’s coming at a critical time. The American Farmland Trust referred to the Valley as “one of the ten most endangered agricultural regions of the US.”
From casual Italian eateries to top-floor luxury hotel restaurants with sweeping views and historic 18th century inns, Hudson Valley Restaurant Week isn’t short on dining options—not to mention plenty of get-away spots and agricultural tourism activities, like fruit-picking and visiting working farms.
Check out the list of participating restaurants below. For more information about Restaurant Week and The Valley Table magazine, go to HudsonValleyRestaurantWeek.com.
