StarChefs.com Editor-in-Chief Antoinette Bruno was in attendance at this year’s annual Can-Do Awards Gala, an event which benefits the Food Bank for New York City’s mission to provide over 250,000 free meals each day to hungry people across the five boroughs. The awards ceremony and dinner honors outstanding activism of individual and corporate Food Bank benefactors.

This year’s event honored the efforts of The Edge, lead guitarist of U2, and actor/comedian Jimmy Fallon, as well as the corporate work of Credit Suisse, Southern Wine & Spirits of America Inc., Time Out New York, and Project Hospitality.

A bevy of celebrity participants came to show their support of the cause – Edward Burns and wife Christy Turlington, David Bowie and wife Iman, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed, Julianne Moore, Rachael Ray and Michael Stipe, to name a few. President Bill Clinton served as the event’s Honorary Dinner Chair, sharing the stage with co-chairs Mario Batali and Susan Cahn and Master of Ceremonies Stanley Tucci.

The gala started off with a cocktail hour followed by a lavish dinner prepared by Pier 60 chef Abigail Kirsch, and was capped off with a champagne and dessert reception that carried on well in to the evening. Ticket sales and a lively auction, featuring celebrity auctioneers Steven Schrippa and John Ventimiglia of The Sopranos, helped to raise over $1.3 million for the cause.

The event brought together a diverse array of public figures bound by the common goal of eradicating the hunger epidemic in New York. The gala was festive and inspirational, and the altruistic nature of the event remained a central focus throughout the evening, proving that the spirit of good-will and charity is still alive and well amongst even the most privileged and celebrated individuals of New York society.
