Biography

Steven Olson, aka “Wine Geek,” is dedicated to the education and consultation of degustation for appreciation and celebration. He lectures and writes about wine, beer, spirits, sake, and virtually any other beverage under the sun, discussing their integral cause-and-effect relationship with food as he preaches the gospel of his mission: making tasting fun by removing the intimidation factor and the pretense.

Olson has been the host of several trade education and product information videos as well as co-host (with Andrea Immer Robinson) of Quench, the Food Network’s weekly program that celebrates what’s happening in the world of beer, wine, and spirits. He currently co-hosts the AOL downloadable video program, Spirit Basics, which takes an in-depth look at the history, production, and uses of the world’s leading spirits. Olson may be best known in the industry, however, for his restaurant consulting, having designed the innovative beverage programs and service systems for several nationally acclaimed restaurants, including the Mayflower Inn in Connecticut, Gramercy Tavern; Chelsea’s acclaimed Mexican restaurant, Sueños, the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City; the Adam Tihany-designed Summit at the Mobil 5-star, AAA 5-diamond BROADMOOR in Colorado Springs. Most recently, Olson designed the beverage programs for OTG Management, which operates dozens of restaurants and wine bars in airports. In 2007, Olson was chosen by the Grupo Posadas hotel consortium to design the beverage programs for their new Aqua properties, which open later this year.

In March 2006, Olson and four partners opened Beverage Alcohol Resource, LLC (BAR), an independent New York-based institution whose mission is to educate, guide, and propagate the healthy, enlightened, and responsible use of beverage alcohol products. The school is in a unique position to create and teach a series of courses that will not just train, but actually educate those who take them, be they service industry professionals, members of the media, or curious consumers. BAR was chosen as Cheers Magazine “Beverage Innovator of the Year” in 2007. Olson writes for several industry publications, such as Food & Wine, Wine & Spirits, and Santé. In 2007, Olson was selected by Bon Appétit magazine as their exclusive wine and spirits consultant.
