The Emperor's New Clothes: A Blind Tasting Wine Tasting

Biography

When Madeline Triffon passed the Master Sommelier examination in 1987, she became one of only two female M.S.s in the world at the time, and the eighth American to have passed the test. She was certainly ground-breaking; today, she is one of 96 American Master Sommeliers, of which 15 are women, and one of only 167 professionals worldwide to have earned the credential. Triffon has served as chairman of the American Chapter of the Court of Master Sommeliers and presently sits on the its board and is its scholarship chair.

In 1995, Triffon joined the Matt Prentice Restaurant Group, a Detroit-based independent restaurant company. As director of wine, she is responsible for development of all wine lists and beverage programs for the company’s four fine-dining rooms and one casual venue – NoVI Chophouse & Lobster Bar, Northern Lakes Seafood Company, Shiraz, Coach Insignia, and Tavern on 13. In addition, she coordinates food and wine events and serves as corporate wine educator.

Wine Spectator has bestowed its Award of Excellence on three MPRG wine lists: NoVI Chophouse, Northern Lakes, and Shiraz. Coach Insignia has received the “Best of Award of Excellence.” Santé magazine named Triffon “Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year” for 1999. Restaurant Hospitality awarded Triffon their Vanguard Award in 2002 for industry leadership and vision.
