This restaurant’s slang-hip name is derived from the Cajun word “ratafia,” which comes from a toast equivalent of "to your health." Health certainly is the operative word for Chef Monica Pope, who practically created the locavore scene in this carnivore-centric city. Besides offering a refreshingly vegetarian-friendly menu, the restaurant hosts a weekly farmers’ market, and “The Green Plum Kitchen,” where Chef Pope teaches local foodies how to prepare and preserve fresh produce. Pope’s, t’afia is a movement just as much as it is a restaurant. Even so, the atmosphere is cozy without sacrificing chic, cool without losing comfort, and satisfying without piling on piety.
