SIMIT: NEW YORKERS’ HEALTHY NEW BREAD CHOICE FOR BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND SNACKS

The Mediterranean’s healthiest bread, a thin twist of tasty artisan bread made without fat or preservatives, coated with crispy sesame seeds, is now available at Simit + Smith, a growing group of cafes for breakfast, lunch and snacks located in New York City and northern New Jersey. Simit + Smith’s simits are also available at specialty food stores such as Agata & Valentina, Garden of Eden, Blue Olive, Amish Markets, Francella, Zeytuna, Foodcellar, Parrot Coffee and others.

Crispy on the outside with light, fluffy bread inside, Simits are made with all natural ingredients, hand rolled and baked fresh locally each day. The traditional Simit is simply coated in healthy sesame seeds, but New Yorkers can also enjoy whole wheat and multigrain Simits. Best by itself with a cup of black tea, Simit + Smith also suggests trying a true Mediterranean breakfast, filling the Simit with Kasseri or Feta Cheese and slices of fresh green pepper and tomato.

Simits are made with flour, yeast and a touch of salt. Each Simit is rolled out by hand then twisted with one practiced fling in the air. They are then dipped into a light molasses bath so that they can be coated in sesame seeds or the special multi-grain topping before popping them into the oven, yielding a crunchy crust while retaining a moist, light texture inside.

Mediterranean countries have enjoyed the Simit for centuries, under many names and now residents of New York and New Jersey can enjoy these healthy breads in the traditional Simit shape, rolls or loaves of bread. Simit + Smith also offers a rich regional pastry called Poğaca (pronounced po-acha). At lunchtime, enjoy Simit Sandwiches with traditional Mediterranean fillings such as black olive paste and Kasseri cheese or with salmon, chicken or roast beef. For snacks Simit + Smith baked Simit chips and offers an array of healthy dips and classic NYC spreads. All other beverages, delicious soups, salads, paninis, scones, cookies, parfaits, yogurts sold at Simit + Smith are organic and sourced locally.

Simit + Smith cafes are located at 124 West 72nd Street, 111 Worth Street and 100 Williams Street in New York City. In Jersey, visit the bakery itself at 721 Anderson Avenue in Cliffside Park.
