NC entrepreneurs expand Bella Bean Organics farmers market home delivery to NC, SC, VA, MD & DC

Bella Bean Organics (www.bellabeanorganics.com), the online farmer’s market specializing in fresh, locally grown, sustainable and organic produce, meats, eggs and artisan specialty foods, has serviced the Piedmont region of North Carolina with home delivery service since 2009, and beginning in May, will expand their farm-to-door weekly deliveries throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC.

Since purchasing Bella Bean Organics in 2012, Coon Rock Farm owners and entrepreneurs Jamie DeMent and Richard Holcomb have dramatically increased product selection, geographic delivery footprint and customer base. “We’ve found home delivery to be the fastest growing segment of our farm’s business, echoing that of the local, organic food movement,” explained Holcomb, whose 55-acre Coon Rock Farm (www.coonrockfarm.com) provides produce, meat and eggs to Bella Bean Organics as well as to over 500 CSA subscriptions, 5 area farmers markets and to their modern farm-to-table downtown Durham restaurant, Piedmont (www.piedmontrestaurant.com). “There’s a real demand for sustainable, farm-grown food that’s also convenient, so extending our service throughout the region is a natural step.”

Bella Bean Organics is farmer-owned, operated and curated. “We’ve invested blood, sweat and tears in finding sustainable sources that we trust, so it’s become a mission of ours to sing their praises and share them with a larger audience,” explained DeMent, whose relationships with the food community have been forged at farmers markets, their restaurants’ back doors, and among travels.

Health-conscious consumers can rely on Bella Bean Organics to satisfy their craving for local foods and fulfill the majority of their weekly shopping needs. Bella Bean taps into as many as 50 local farms for everything from African collards and oak-grown shiitakes, to local bacon, grass-fed beef, heirloom turkeys, sustainably caught seafood and rbGH-free milk, to offer over 1000 products. “Our goal is to offer such a well-rounded selection that you really can do all of your weekly grocery shopping with Bella Bean Organics,” explained DeMent, who remembers spending half of every week traveling to farmers markets, grocery stores and receiving mail orders to source these foods. “Offering the convenience of home delivery and the ability to customize a selection that works for your family has been critical to providing more folks access to these delicious and nutritious foods,” explained Jamie. “We even offer recipe kits, complete with every ingredient you need,” and gifts, including a Pickle Gift Box.

DeMent and Holcomb are champions of Southern food artisans. They take particular pride in serving as an avenue for small-scale items – like the farmstead cheeses produced at Chapel Hill Creamery – to reach new customers. Lusty Monk Mustards from Asheville, Melina’s Fresh Pasta from Durham, Nello’s Sauce and Videri’s bean-to-bar chocolates from Raleigh are just a few of the small-batch artisans featured. Bella Bean also offers flours and heirloom grains from Anson Mills, a gluten-free line of products, breads from NC’s artisan bread bakery, La Farm Bakery, Big Spoon Nut Butters, and locally roasted coffee and tea harvested in South Carolina are available, too.

Orders for Bella Bean Organics are requested by 5pm on Friday, and delivered fresh to front doors the following Tuesday or Wednesday, depending upon the market. There is a $20 minimum.

Holcomb and DeMent are part of the founding team behind other successful food businesses including Coon Rock Farm in Hillsborough and Piedmont Restaurant in downtown Durham. They were also partners in Zely & Ritz before it closed in 2013, a farm-to-table restaurant which opened in Raleigh, NC in 2004 and was named one of the “Top 20 Best Organic Restaurants in America” in 2005.

Jamie DeMent was raised in Eastern North Carolina. As she saw family farms disappearing and industrialized farming taking over, she searched for ways to revive the simplicity of eating healthy, locally grown food. In 2001, after completing her degree in Southern History and African American Studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, she became a Legislative Aid for Representative Brad Miller on Capitol Hill, then was a Director of Special Projects for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences where she supported fundraising efforts for the Nature Research Center. DeMent left the Museum to join Richard Holcomb at Coon Rock Farm. Today her days are spent planting, harvesting, cooking and selling products from her farm. She is also a guest lecturer at Duke University, and teaches cooking classes at A Southern Season.

Richard Holcomb received a B.S. from the University of South Carolina and an M.S. in Computer Science from North Carolina State University. He helped start several technology companies including StrikeIron, GadgetSpace, HAHT Commerce and Q+E Software. Richard is an active venture investor and has served on the corporate boards of several public and private technology companies. He has served on several public advisory boards including the NCSU Graduate School Board of Advisors, the North Carolina Electronics and Information Technology Association, the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, NCSU Engineering Entrepreneur’s Program Advisory Board, and is a former appointed member of the North Carolina Information Resource Management Commission. During his career, he has won several awards including the 1993 Ernst and Young Technology Entrepreneur of the Year for North Carolina and the 1996 Business Leader Top Gun Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2004 the farming ways of his youth beckoned, and Richard purchased Coon Rock Farm in Hillsborough; since he has partnered with Sarig and Nancy Agasi and Jamie DeMent to open Zely & Ritz in Raleigh, Piedmont in Durham, and Bella Bean Organics.
