A Year in Planning, Brothers Restaurant Lands a Permanent Home,
Honoring the Rich History and Tradition of Santa Ynez
SANTA YNEZ, California; November 2013 - Brothers Matt and Jeff Nichols, chefs and long time Santa Barbara County restaurateurs, finally have a permanent home to hang their toques. Brothers at the Red Barn will open to their doors to the public on this month after a year of painstaking remodeling and restoration of a beloved Santa Ynez location. This will be the third and permanent home in Santa Barbara County of Brothers, after the first Brothers Restaurant (1996-2000) in Solvang, followed by Brothers at Mattei's Tavern in Los Olivos (2002-2012). Brothers at the Red Barn is located at3539 Sagunto Street, in the center of the small village and right off Highway 246.
Loyal fans of Brothers will be happy to have the return of many of Matt and Jeff Nichols well- known dishes from their repertoire - Tuna Tartare with Avocado, Spicy Yuzu, and Crispy Ginger; Kobocha Squash Soup; Seasonal Market Risotto; Horseradish-Crusted Irish Salmon with Whole Grain Mustard Sauce; Pan Seared Halibut with Ruby Red Grapefruit Sauce; Slow-Roasted Prime Rib, Au Jus with Horseradish Cream, Grilled Iowa Pork Rib Chop with Apple Sauce and Honey Butter; and Pinot Noir Braised Short Ribs, with other new dishes designed expressly for The Red Barn. Long time Pastry Chef Stephanie Jackson will prepare her gifted seasonal desserts, including Brothers' signature comfort sweets of Olallieberry Pie with White Chocolate Olallieberry Swirl Ice Cream; Sweet Potato Cheesecake with Marshmallow Fluff and Maple-Pecan Sauce, and everyone's favorite Mud Pie with Kahlua-Caramel Sauce.
Matt and Jeff Nichols welcome Brothers' friend and alumnus J.C. Carricaburu to run the front of as the restaurant's General Manager after years working as the Bar Manager for their operations.
Directing the wine program is Matt Nichols, who built a wine list specializing in local selection from the
Central Coast. Nichols has curated a list of nearly 80 wines, nearly all from Santa Barbara County, along
with a selection of Champagne. The list is diverse, concentrating on the local AVAs. Matt Nichols is also developing a comprehensive library of wines that he has secured from a handful of local winemakers and friends for The Red Barn cellar. Brothers at the Red Barn will offer changing selections of five red and five white wine varietals by the glass from Santa Barbara County vintners. Matt Nichols is also creating a
list of local signature craft cocktails, to be announced soon, named for, and honoring his drinking
Matt and Jeff Nichols, along with Matt's wife, Marta, collaborated in the refurbishing and interior design of The Red Barn with the assistance of local firms RPM Architects and the Urquidez Building Corporation, who utilized artisans from the Santa Ynez Valley. With a fresh, de rigueur exterior of barn-red paint, the interior expresses the warmth of a local tavern, using clean lines and a rustic feel. Accented with oak, restored branded wood beams, a white paneled ceiling and wrought iron lighting, the L shaped room is refreshed, with higher ceilings and massive glass windows that open the space. As before, there is an open display kitchen observing the chefs at work. Newly created for the restaurant is a glass-enclosed wine room flanking the dining room that co-exists with two wood-burning fireplaces preserved from the original Red Barn. Firewood is supplied by the Agin Brothers, the family that has serviced the Nichols family with seasoned wood for ten years. Two wrought iron and rope chandeliers, hand crafted by local blacksmith Hans Duus, illuminate the room and are lighted with replicas of vintage Edison light bulbs, with more of the Edison-styled glass glob
