The Chianti Wine Consortium Hits The Road This Fall

The Chianti Wine Consortium was established in 1927 by a group of wine growers from the Provinces of Florence, Siena, Arezzo and Pistoia, and later expanded its operations to include the entire production region. It was legally recognized by the Production Regulation of 1967, and incorporated into the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin - DOCG).

Over 3,500 producers, cultivating more than 15,000 hectares of vineyards and producing 800,000 hectoliters of Chianti and 110 million bottles, are protected by the Consortium which, due to its tradition of representation and operations was appointed as the official monitor of Chianti by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF) by the ministerial decree of 22 May 1978. More recently the Consortium has expanded its activities to include the promotion of Chianti in international territories through a series of promotional events.

This fall, as part of a project funded by the EU, the Chianti Wine Consortium will be visiting Miami, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C. and New York with a series of workshops, press dinners and in-store promotions. These activities will give press and trade the opportunity to meet with winery representatives and to really discover what makes Chianti one of Italy's most famous and representative wines.

The activities will involve both producers which are already present on the US market and others which are looking to enter the market. Those already available will be participating in in-store consumer-aimed promotions in retail outlets in the San Francisco and Miami areas and a series of press dinners in New York, Chicago and Miami. San Francisco and Washington DC however will host dedicated Chianti events with a larger number of both well known and little known producers participating in walk around tastings and guided seminars. A select group of producers which are not yet present on the US market will also be participating at the 8th edition of the Vinitaly US Tour which will visit New York, Chicago and Boston from October 25 to 28.

The activities will also be supported by a promotional campaign in major industry media.
