The Gelato World Tour touched down in Austin, Texas May 9 to 11 at the Republic Square Park, showcasing the who’s who of the artisan gelato community. Sixteen contestants from North America created and presented their best flavors to a panel of judges lead by StarChefs.com Rising Star Pastry Chef Philip Speer and was hosted by the Carpigiani Gelato University. The event also featured free gelato demonstrations and talks about the culture of gelato and the difference between gelato and ice cream.
James Coleridge and Salvatore Boccarossa of Bella Gelateria in Vancouver came in first place with their Salted Pecan, Montmorency Tart Cherries, and Tahitian Vanilla gelato. Stefano Versace and Francisco Blanco of Versace Gelateria Italiana & Gourmet took second place with their “Profumi di Sicilia” flavored gelato—a combination of nougat and ricotta cheese cannoli with pistachios and chocolate chips swirled with caramel. Lastly, Matthew Lee of Gelato Shop: TEO came in third place with their “Nuts” flavor, a sweet swirl of peanut butter and chocolate hazelnut spread.
