Liquid Culture: Mixology - A Bonafide Career
Just as mixology has developed critical mass in the restaurant industry, mixologists have garnered respect for themselves. Mixology is a career now; not just a spirit-slinging job to make ends meet. We’ve seen mixologists go from behind the bar to becoming brand ambassadors, like 2008 Chicago Rising Star John Kinder, and full-time mixology consultants and beverage caterers, like Chad Solomon and Christy Pope of Cuff and Buttons (NYC). And there’s a lot of fluidity within mixology, as well: mixologists work for multiple bars, juggling shifts and developing a devoted following of customers. Some bars host guest mixologists from other local bars or even from out of town, and even mixology-dabbling chefs get behind the bar (Pastry Chef Johnny Iuzzini has made guest appearances within the Manhattan mixology scene).
