Rising Star Chef Walker Stern of Battersby - Biography
Walker Stern began his culinary career at a young age, moving up the ranks from dishwasher to Culinary Institute of America graduate. A Bay Area native, his career has carried him to both coasts. In San Francisco he completed an externship at La Folie before landing a position under Chef Sylvain Portay at The Ritz Carlton Dining Room in Napa. In New York, he stumbled upon former CIA classmate Joseph Ogrodnek while working at Essex House, planting the seeds for a future collaborative project. Stern continued on to Dan Barber’s Blue Hill, and 81 before taking on the role of chef de cuisine at The Vanderbilt.
After assembling a small budget, investors, a business plan, and help from family and friends, Stern and Ogrodnek built Battersby from the ground up and opened the space in Cobble Hill in late 2011.The restaurant reflects bothWalker’s and his classmate-turned-partner Ogrodnek’s culinary sensibilities. Their holistic approach to fine dining is elegant, simple, and delicious.
