Chef Vincent Muraco of Andaz 5th Avenue - Biography

New York, NY

August 2012

Vincent Muraco grew up in a large Italian family in Brooklyn, New York, where cooking was a shared passion. And while he got early professional exposure at his family’s pizzeria and bagel shops and alongside his pastry-chef aunt, Muraco’s nearly 20-year career officially began at 17. That’s when Muraco enrolled in the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco—the youngest student to ever be accepted into the culinary arts program.

Muraco began his culinary career while in school, working at the Hyde Street Bistro, where he worked his way up to chef de cuisine. Shortly after graduation in 1993, Muraco became chef tournant at Park Hyatt San Francisco and then executive sous chef at the Park Hyatt Los Angeles. He also spent some time as executive chef at the Shorebreak Hotel in Huntington Beach, California and Miami’s Grove Isle Resort and Spa and the Hotel Victor in South Beach.

When Andaz 5th Avenue opened in July 2010, Muraco assisted with the launch of The Shop and Bar Downstairs and helped create the opening menus, eventually returning to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a private chef. When the executive chef position opened at Andaz 5th Avenue in early 2012, General Manager Jonathan Frolich knew Muraco was the perfect person for the job. Muraco was appointed executive chef of Andaz 5th Avenue in January 2012, and has been perfecting the concept of seasonal, farm-to-table cuisine at the hotel ever since.
