Chef Shaun Brian Sells of OCEAN|362 - Biography

St. John, VI

September 2017

The exuberant Chef Shaun Brian Sells started life in a two-person tent in Corral Bay on the island of St. Thomas. Sells worked at Pelican Isle Yacht Club in Naples, Florida, The Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and The Westin St. John, also in Virgin Islands.

He landed on the Cape Cod islands to pursue culinary dreams that materialized on the shores of Martha’s Vineyard—where Edgartown Harbor meets Katama Bay. At Water Street inside the Harbor View Hotel, Sells harmoniously brought together the island’s back-to-nature philosophy with the science of molecular gastronomy and global flavors. He sourced the freshest produce, meats, fish, and poultry from local farms and fishermen and prepared dishes to highlight local flavors. Sells was named to Zagat’s “30 under 30” list for his work in 2012.

Sells returned to St. John to take over the kitchen of Ocean 362. As executive chef and operator, Sells is crafting modern, Caribbean dishes with an attention to local, foraged ingredients. He also makes ceramic dishes, wood cutting boards, and has even built a home for his family. After hurricanes Irma and Maria in the summer of 2017, everything Sells has built on the island has been washed away. He is currently looking for opportunities to rebuild his life and career in back on the U.S. mainland.
