Bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana of Super Lyan - Biography

London, UK

September 2017

Ryan Chetiyawardana (aka Mr. Lyan) grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, in a family with a strong food and drink culture. As an adult he studied cooking (as well as biology and philosophy at The University of Edinburgh), and although he loved being in the kitchen, Chetiyawardana wanted more direct guest interaction. Behind the bar he went, gaining formative experience at famed Bramble Bar.

In 2013, Chetiyawardana opened White Lyan in London to nearly immediate acclaim. The first bar globally to use no perishables, no ice, and no branded spirits, White Lyan was crowned “Best New Bar in the World” by Tales of the Cocktail in 2014, and Chetiyawardana was named “International Bartender of the Year” for 2015. White Lyan has since closed and transformed into Super Lyan.

Chetiyawardana’s second bar, Dandelyan at the Mondrian Hotel won Tale’s “Best New Bar Award” in 2015 and “World’s Best Cocktail Menu” in 2016. It currently sits at number three on San Pellegrino’s “World’s 50 Best Bars” list.

In 2014, Chetiyawardana launched a line of “Mr. Lyan” bottled cocktails, and his consulting firm, Mr. Lyan Studio, has counted Bacardi and Diageo as clients. In fall 2017, Chetiyawardana will release Good Together, the follow up to his first book, Good Things.
