Rick Schofield has dedicated the last 14 years to the wine trade. Originally from Montreal, he started working in restaurants and country clubs at age 16 in the Albany, New York area. Since then, the pursuit of wine knowledge has been a career path as well as a lifelong hobby and pleasure. He has toured wine regions in Australia, British Columbia, California, France, Germany, Italy, New York, Ontario, Oregon, Spain, and Washington and has been a professional member of the American Wine Society since 1995.
While Head Sommelier at The Sagamore Resort in Bolton Landing, New York, he was recruited by the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park for the position of beverage manager. He was responsible for sourcing, evaluating, purchasing, storing, and issuing all wines, spirits, and beer for the CIA’s four public restaurants and for CIA beverage courses. Additionally, Schofield arranged the wine pairings for VIP functions, catered events, and prix-fixe dinners. During this time, Schofield developed and orchestrated the CIA’s acclaimed Winter Dining Series and also taught adult education wine classes. After this period with the CIA, Schofield was invited back to the Sagamore Resort as wine director and consultant for a summer season. After the conclusion of the season, he transitioned from sommelier and wine director into the world of wine retail.
For nine years, Schofield was the assistant wine director and buyer for Viscount Wine and Liquor in Wappingers Falls, New York—one of America’s largest stand-alone wine stores, with a stock of 8,000 fine wines. Schofield is an advanced sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers, a Certified Wine Educator (CWE) with the Society of Wine Educators, an International Bordeaux Educator with the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux, a Spanish Wine Educator through the Spanish Wine Academy, a Wine Location Specialist (with distinction) with the Center for Wine Origins, an International Wine Judge and a Certified Wine Judge through the American Wine Society, and a Wine Judges of Canada Member Schofield also holds the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (London) Advanced Certificate (Distinction).
Schofield consults on wine buying and wine lists for stores, restaurants, suppliers, and winery owners, and he has professional experience and expertise giving seminars and tutored tastings. He plans educational wine events and wine dinners. Schofield leads and presents sessions for the National Conference of the American Wine Society and the Annual Conference of Society of Wine Educators. In 2010, he acted as a judge for the 1st annual Somm Slam at the StarChefs.com International Chefs Congress in New York, New York.
