Pat LaFrieda of Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors - Biography

North Bergen, NJ

May 2012

Pat LaFrieda’s first introduction to the meat world was in the summer of 1981, when he was just 10 years old and learning the tricks of the trade at his grandfather’s butchering business. But LaFrieda’s father never wanted his son to join the family business; he just wanted to instill in young Pat the importance of hard work–by exposing him to the grueling task of standing in a 36-degree meat locker, breaking down meat with saws and knives. But instead of finding an office job like his father had hoped (except for a brief year as a Wall Street broker), LaFrieda took to the meat business and has developed it to one of the most prestigious protein purveyors in the country. Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors sells to over 600 customers in New York City, Las Vegas, Miami and Chicago.

Their signature beef is chopped rather than ground, and Pat has created over 50 custom blends, delivering to restaurants such as Shake Shack, The Spotted Pig, Union Square Café, and Minetta Tavern (where the Black Label Burger still reigns supreme). In 2012, US. Foods launched a line of Pat LaFrieda burgers, allowing meat-lovers across the country the chance to enjoy the LaFrieda meat magic. In the same year, The Food Network aired “Meat Men,” a new reality show depicting LaFrieda with his father and cousin in their daily grind.
