Restaurateur Matt Levine of IndieFORK - Biography

New York, NY

October 2014

Brooklyn-bred Matt Levine got his entrepreneurial spark ignited early, working as a bar back and server throughout high school and college. At just 22 years old, he took a detour from hospitality to create men’s clothing company Steelo, garnering accolades and making World Global Style Network’s list of “Top 20 Brands in the World.”

Missing the world of hospitality, Levine bought a small bar on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and a downtown nightlife empire was born. The Eldridge opened in 2008 and became an exclusive destination for Manhattan’s elite. He followed that with Sons of Essex in 2011, a bar and restaurant for which the internet marketing campaign quickly went viral, boasting celebrity testimonials by the likes of Padma Lakshmi and Chloë Sevigny. Cocktail Bodega followed soon after.

In 2013, Levine launched indieFORK, a full service food & beverage operations company which develops and manages a portfolio of cocktail bars, lounges and restaurants. Most recently, Levine—along with the rest of the indieFORK team—moved business out of the Lower East Side, opening Chalk Point Kitchen and The Handy Liquor Bar, both in SoHo. And while his empire continues to grow to adjacent neighborhoods and beyond, this Brooklyn boy will never leave behind that “creative, entrepreneurial, and gritty” spirit he first discovered on a downtown block in Manhattan.
