Sommelier Leah Moorhead of Aviary - Biography
Oregon native Leah Moorhead brings bi-coastal wine experience to her role as wine director at Aviary in Portland, Oregon. In New York City, Moorhead worked as an assistant sommelier at Del Posto and served as assistant manager and bartender at Wine Bar NYC. She was also trained in the traditional French fine dining style as a server at Jean Georges. After returning to Portland in 2007, Moorhead assisted Andina’s wine director, Ken Collura with the inventory and ordering, as well as staff education. She also drafted bi-monthly wine articles for the restaurant’s newsletter. Moorhead continued her wine education both as a server at Tabla Mediterranean Bistro and also with Domaine Selections, where she had a brief stint learning the distribution side of the wine business.
At Aviary, Moorhead has created a wine list to mirror the modern and global influences of the cuisine. The list is strongly influenced by the wines of France and the Pacific Northwest. Some of the selections on her list are inspired by the natural wine movement in France spearheaded by the Association des Vins Naturels. Moorhead also works with Aviary’s chefs—Sarah Pliner, Katherine Whitehead and Jasper Shen to create cocktails rooted in the region’s seasonal availability.
