Sommelier Kyle Ridington of The Mark Restaurant - Biography

New York, NY

April 2012

Kyle Ridington was born and raised in a suburb outside Philadelphia, where White Zinfandel was something Mom and Dad drank once a week at dinner. While earning a B.S. in Business Marketing at Saint Francis University and working at a market research firm in Chicago, he had no interest in food and wine.  But when Ridington decided to leave the marketing world, he began serving at an Italian cafe where he saw wine as a serious concept for the first time.  Soon after, Ridington took up courses with the International Sommelier Guild and The Court of Master Sommeliers to become a certified sommelier through both institutions.

Ridington then went on to work for Laurent Gras's Three-Star Michelin restaurant L20 as a captain and, one year later, was offered a position as sommelier at The Trump International Hotel & Tower's One-Star Michelin restaurant Sixteen. In his year and a half at Sixteen, Ridington traveled to New York City a dozen times and found the food and wine scene there to be a real barn-burner.  In May 2011, Ridington packed up his suits and Vespa and left Chicago for New York City, accepting a sommelier position at The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges a few months later. Ridington is currently studying for his Court of Master Sommeliers Advanced certification.
