Writer Julia Usher - Biography
Julia Usher grew up loving sweets of all kinds and spent countless afternoons helping her mother baking in the kitchen. By 12 years old, she was already impressing visitors with home-made bread and multi-layer tortes. But Usher did not head down a culinary path immediately; she worked as a mechanical engineer and management consultant for years after graduating from Yale in 1984. Usher finally gave baking her full-time attention by enrolling in the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts in 1994. A year after graduation, she opened AzucArte, a boutique bakery specializing in wedding cakes. Usher is now a food writer, stylist, entertaining consultant, party producer, and prop stylist. Her writing and baking has appeared in Dessert Professional, Bon Appétit, Fine Cooking, Better Homes and Gardens, Gastronomica, and nearly every national bridal magazine. Usher has also published two books, Cookie Swap and Ultimate Cookie. She is a James Beard Foundation Journalism Awards finalist and winner of three Cordon d’Or Awards.
