Chef Ernesto Uchimura of Plan Check Kitchen + Bar - Biography

Los Angeles, CA

August 2014

Moving from Buenos Aires to Los Angeles as a baby, Ernesto Uchimura grew up eating his mother’s Argentinean dinners in the midst of L.A.’s culinary melting pot. Always dabbling in painting and drawing, Uchimura considered enrolling in art school, but ultimately decided that food was a better outlet for creativity.

Uchimura attended culinary school at Paul Smith’s College in upstate New York while living with his uncle, who also got him his first restaurant job at Ponderosa Steakhouse. Back in L.A., Uchimura worked in various kitchens until he settled in Westwood, cooking at Palomino and later Napa Valley Grille.

With both managerial and cooking skills under his belt, Uchimura became the opening executive chef at the original Umami Burger. After helping build that successful franchise, in 2012, he ventured out on his own, with Plan Check Kitchen + Bar—the ideal outlet for Uchimura’s innovative techniques that already stand out in the L.A. melting pot.
