Sommelier Erin White of Restaurant August - Biography

New Orleans, LA

February 2012

When Erin White first moved to New Orleans in 1982, she began her love affair with wine at Flagon's, a wine bar on Magazine Street. White continued working in wine bars for six years in New Orleans and San Francisco, and after spending a year traveling in Europe, she became the Assistant Sommelier at the Windsor Court Hotel. She took over the wine program after three years and worked a total of seven years there, six of which Chef John Besh was at the helm in the kitchen. She next joined Emeril Lagasse for his first solo venture, Emeril’s, where he brought White on as his very first sommelier, and together they designed the wine list.

White moved to Colorado in 1995 with her 5-year-old son, Adam. She never lost touch with her passion, however, spending the next 14 years buying wine for a small local wine shop. This career shift allowed her to conduct tastings, maintain relationships with wineries and importers, and still be home in the evenings for dinner and homework.

White knew she would always return to New Orleans, a city she loves because of its spirit, people, and most of all, great restaurants. "Reuniting in 2010 with Chef Besh and running the wine program at Restaurant August is a dream come true. This is such a great kitchen to work with, a real collaboration," she says. White continues to make an indelible mark on Restaurant August, combining years of experience in wine bars, restaurants, and retail with her commitment to the guest above all, and to building a great wine program.
