Brewer Brian Buckowski of Terrapin Brewery - Biography
Brian “Spike” Buckowski took the long way to get to Athens, Georgia. Born in Connecticut, he moved to Atlanta in 1992, where he began homebrewing. Ten years later, he and business partner John Cochran founded Terrapin Beer Company. Athens (and the world, judging by some of the brewery’s awards) has never been the same.
Buckowski graduated from the American Brewers Guild in California in 1996, but had been forced to use other breweries’ equipment for the first few years of operation. But once Terrapin made a name for itself (in no small part due to its come-from-nowhere win at the Great American Beer Festival for its Rye Pale IPA in 1996), he was able to get investors (including Miller Coors, which owns a minority stake) to help further his dreams. Today, he oversees the dozen or so brews currently being made at Terrapin’s 40,000 square foot facility.
