Boston-born Wine Consultant Beth von Benz began her career in wine while working summers with her sister for a catering company in Maine. She would go on to work as a sommelier a numerous restaurants in New York, including Ansonia, Estiatorio Milos, Judson Grill, and Porter House. She has been in New York now for over 25 years.
She spent time on the retail side of wine too, first at Gotham Wines, then Chelsea Wine Vault, and finally as a Senior Buyer for American wine at Zachys Wine & Liquor in Scarsdale. In 2004, von Benz established MvB Consulting, featuring such clients as Sir Terence Conran at Guastavino’s, Restaurant Associates at the United States Open Tennis, Nick & Toni’s Café, Five Points, and Vintrust in Napa Valley.
She has guest sommelier-ed at The Masters of Food and Wine in Carmel, The Wine Spectator’s Wine Experience, and The Napa Valley Wine Auction 2006. Through her company, MVB Consulting, she consults for The New York Times, Santé, Food & Wine, The Wine Array, the German Trade Commission, Wines of Chile, and All About Greek Wine. She was a judge at the Hudson Valley wine competition, the 1st Annual Somm Slam at the 5th Annual StarChefs International Chefs Congress, the 6th Annual Cyprus wine competition and the Florida International Wine Challenge. She has lectured at the ICE and at the French Culinary Institute.
Her articles have appeared in Santé, Wine Spectator, Food & Wine, The New York Times, Wine Adventure, and Vintrust.com, and she has been a guest speaker with Mike Colemeco on Food Talk WOR radio.
