Hi! My name is Stephanie Zonis, and welcome to the August, 2001
edition of "For Chocolate Lovers Only". Each month,
you'll find recipes, tips, and recommendations on chocolate
specialties.
Chocolate Recommendation of the Month:
Once upon a time, there was a researcher in the Amazon who decided
that someone needed to create a market for the forest fruits
that grew there. He wanted to provide cash crops for local farmers
to encourage them to farm organically and sustainably; he also
wanted to promote biodiversity. That man's name was Doug Stewart,
and he founded Howler Gelato & Sorbet in 1994 as
a means of accomplishing his worthy goal. The results of their
efforts are organic lines of both gelatos and sorbets, in flavors
ranging from dark forest chocolate to Mayan blackberry. The
business became a true family affair when Doug's brother Kirkham
teamed up with him in 1997.
I
admire dedication to good food wherever I find it, and the devotion
of these brothers to their products is something extraordinary.
When no one in this country could produce gelato in small quantities
to their high standards, Howler Gelato & Sorbet bought
a gelato factory and did it themselves. Their vanilla bean gelato
contains organic beans from both Mexico and Madagascar, and
I can personally attest to its good flavor and texture. The
organic mangos for both sorbet and gelato (yes, a mango gelato!)
are grown in managed forests in northern Peru. We are fortunate
to live in an era when people can do helpful things for the
planet and produce worthwhile frozen desserts simultaneously,
and I urge you to give these products a try. Check your local
natural foods store or co-op, though the products are also in
some upscale markets. The website, www.howler.com, is under
construction, so if you have questions it's best to contact
Howler Gelato & Sorbet via e-mail (howlerprod@aol.com)
or by phone at (800) HOWLERS.
