Rising Stars Press Kit

The StarChefs Rising Stars Revue™ showcases up-and-coming chefs who have been chosen by StarChefs as Rising Stars. All of the Rising Stars participating in the Revue are featured on StarChefs.com. They were recommended for selection by the StarChefs Advisory Board, which is made up of over 20 of the country’s most influential chefs. Final choices were made by StarChefs’ editorial team. Ultimately, creativity, ambition, exquisite presentation and, most importantly, delicious food won each chef the designation of StarChefs Rising Star.

“If you see me at Allen & Delancey, tell me to go home,” Rick Smilow said last night.

Rick’s the head of the Institute of Culinary Education. He and I were at the first afterparty of Starchefs’ “Rising Star Review,” which in New York is held at the end of the International Chefs Congress, which has become Starchefs’ flagship event. This year the Review was at the Museum of Natural History, in the Blue Whale room.

New York City’s Junior Merino tends bar at the Museum of Modern Art’s showcase restaurant, the Modern, and is a certified master sommelier, a master mixologist for “Cocktail Times” and the winner of Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence and the 2006 Star Chef’s Award. In the world of Big People Drinks, Junior is nobody’s junior. Perhaps his biggest accolade came last month when he was honored as Bartender of the Week on the world’s most meticulously spell-checked wine and spirits Web site, www.the-imbiber.net. “Being recognized by the Imbiber was the biggest highlight of my career — of my life, actually,” Junior most likely would have said had anyone bothered to ask.

At last year’s StarChefs New York Rising Stars Revue the food was great, the chefs were available, and the operations were charmingly mismanaged. Standing in a small second-story space in the twenties I perceived it as cute when those of us that paid extra money to get in early were delayed a quarter of our hour preview time while they chilled champagne and got caviar ready. We happily drank wine from coffee cups after the glasses ran out early in the evening, and all in all there was camaraderie in the small group that had assembled joining together with our hosts in the interest of celebrating the talents of the next generation of chefs in New York rather than focus on the trivial.

On Wednesday evening we were treated to “The New York Rising Stars Push-Cart Gala.” For the event, Crobar was turned into a giant street-food style festival, where each Rising Star had a push-cart of offerings from their restaurant. Of note was Chef-owner Iacopo Falai of Falai in Lower East Side, who handed out fois-gras-stuffed phyllo dipped in savory chocolate and surprised everyone by handing out clever, logo-baring to-go samples of his creation.

Some star chefs burn fast and bright: one great restaurant, one Food Network pilot, and then they're gone. Others—the Schlows and Schlesingers of the world—become legends in their own right, earning their cities a shining spot in the culinary universe.

Caught on Camera - Rising stars

The StarChefs.com Rising Stars Revue, a tasting gala celebrating the city's hottest culinary talent, was in full effect at the Fairmont Chicago hotel. The champagne was flowing and innovative wine pairings were found at each table. From poprock-crusted foie lollipops and truffle risotto with frog legs and trumpet mushrooms created by Graham Elliot Bowles of the Avenues at Peninsula Hotel to the honeycrisp apple tartlet with smokey apple and cider ice cream made by the fabulous pastry chef Mindy Segal of HotChocolate, it was easy to see what the future holds for Chicago dining. With many signature dishes of up-and-coming culinary stars from the top restaurants in town, leaving stuffed was an understatement, as it was impossible to pass up any of the food.
