I have been a fan of Emeril Lagasse for quite a few years and would often watch his program at night to unwind after finishing my shift at a the hospital. I spent 11 years there as a chaplain...most of the time as a Trauma Chaplain in the ER. about two years ago I was asked by my Superiors to be the Pastoral Director of a Soup Kitchen in Detroit. I accepted the position and have been here since October of 1998. We are the largest Soup kitchen in the state, serving close to 60,000 meals each month to the poor and needy of Detroit. My reason for wanting to contact Emeril is not for recipes, it is for a possible donation of one of his books to the Annual SOCK Dinner Benefit. My brothers and sisters have his books and we have used them for family get togethers. I think it would be a wonderful tie-in if we were to get an autographed book from Emeril for the Silent Auction we will have the night of the Benefit. The benefit takes place at the Merriott and this year will be the 24th year of the event. We expect to have between 1600 and 1700 people at the event. I know that Emeril must get a lot of request and I do understand that most can not be addressed. As I said, we serve close to 60,000 people
each month...between 1/4 and 1/3rd of all our meals are served to children. They are the children of the working poor. We ask no questions of anyone who walks into one of our two kitchen sites...we serve them. We are Franciscans and find it easier to serve people then preach to them.
