I dunno- By "genetically modified" one could conceivably mean something as simple as crossing two breeds of rice by cross pollination - one that tastes good and is frail, and one that tastes awful but is hardy. With luck, you can get a strong rice that tastes good. Heck, I'd rather eat genetically modified grains and foods than half the stuff that comes out of factories that I toss in the microwave.
Farmers have been doing this for centuries by selecting their best seeds and plants and crossing them with hardy varieties. I think it's just an issue these days because it can be done in a lab, rather than out in a field.
