The vast majority of people are completely unaware of the extensive testing that is done on modified gene products. All genetically engineered organisms fall under the supervision of the Recombinant DNA Advisory Council, the USDA and/or the EPA. I'm surprised also that even though you work for a food manufacturer, you did not know that 50-60% of the food products you buy in the store contain genetically modified foods. A good question then is, Do you feel any different after eating modified foods?
: Personally (ecologically, taste-wise, etc.) I am not especially happy with the idea that growing things meant to be eaten are being altered WITHOUT SUFFICIENT SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF THE CONSEQUENCES.
: However: I work for a food manufacturer. Consistency of taste, color, etc. of ingredients is very important to us. The seasonal variations in items even as "simple" as Spanish onions or canned tomatoes can make my worklife hell. My boss does not really understand how to adjust for these variations, so I keep telling her that we need to buy genetically modified ingredients that will be consistent no matter what. (I'm only half joking.)
